HS Code Definition — Harmonized System Codes

An HS code is defined as an internationally standardized six-digit product classification code used by customs authorities to identify goods in international trade.

The code is hierarchical: the first 2 digits identify the chapter (e.g., 84 — Machinery), the first 4 digits identify the heading, and all 6 digits identify the subheading. Chapters are grouped into 21 sections covering everything from live animals to works of art.

Because the 6-digit level is globally harmonized, the same product carries the same first six digits whether you are shipping to the US, the EU, or Japan. The final digits beyond six are country-specific.
