How Many Digits Is an HS Code?

At the international level, an HS code has 6 digits. These 6 digits are harmonized across almost all countries that trade internationally.

Many countries extend the code further: the United States uses 10-digit HTS codes (the extra digits carry US duty rates and statistical suffixes), the EU uses 8-digit CN codes plus TARIC extensions, and many Asian countries use 8 or 10 digits.

When you look up an HS code, always check the digit level you are required to declare in the destination country. The first 6 digits will match worldwide; the remainder is country-specific.
